Waters, Ralph M.

Ralph Milton Waters was a pioneering American anesthesiologist whose leadership, innovations, and commitment to education helped establish anesthesiology as a recognized academic and clinical specialty in the United States. Widely regarded as the "Father of Academic Anesthesiology," Waters founded the nation's first academic anesthesiology training program and trained a generation of physicians who shaped the specialty throughout the twentieth century.

Waters' influence extended far beyond his own institution. His trainees affectionately referred to themselves as the "Aqualumni." Through these physicians and their trainees, Waters' educational model became the foundation of academic anesthesiology programs throughout North America.
